Questions for Matteo Rossi Doria

ly
Q [by Dalila Cortella]

Grazie molte.
  • ENG: Could you please say again what is the material used to coat Rigamonti’s stretcher in order to avoid moisture condensation? Is the protection applied only on the side which is in contact with the artwork or on the whole stretcher?

A

  • ENG: The textile is applied on the inner surface of the stretcher, the one in contact with the painting. I used double-sided adhesive tape and a close-weave polyester canvas (Lipari CTS). It is very important, if possible, to ensure a correct air-circulation and a periodic check.

Q [by Alexandra Galitskaya]

  • ENG: If it’s possible to respond, a question to Mr. Doria Rossi and to others as for representatives of their international restoration schools: which are the main subject/area of attention of nowadays studies (as they personally see the current situation) in their country?

A

  • ENG: It's not so easy for me to answer this question because I don't know all italian institutions involved in conservation training. Anyway what I know is that only recently(last ten years) we have programs( close to 20 Universities, Academies, Institutes) all over our nation responding also to local needs such as the School of Mosaic Conservation in Ravenna to make an example. This new condition finally brought our community out of the old system based on the two official schools OPD and ICR. These institutions respond to national training standards, programs and protocols and are divided in areas of specialization called PFP (Progetto Formativo Professionale). PFP1 is focused on stone, wall paintings, stucco, mosaics and archeological materials, PFP2 on panel and canvas paintings, polychrome sculpture and modern and contemporary art and so on on paper, textile, ceramics, etc. Therefore institutions respect national guidelines they differ scientific contents and methodologies depending on personal experiences and knowledge of teachers/trainers involved that rarely have stable contracts and most often are independent conservators with temporary contracts for the last of each program.Hope I helped to let you introduced in our system but if you want more detailed info probably the colleagues in CCR La Venaria Reale can do a better job.

Q [by Karolina Soppa]

  • ENG: I examined some paintings with the laboratory (FTIR, FTIR-FPA) (16th-19th century) and many had no or very little protein isolation (see de Mayerne manuscript). Some have wheat starch isolation.Do we have enough data to generate good models? We need more microtests on the originals, see microindentation or for the canvas see ZKK 2016, issue 2, pages 351-362.

Q [by Monica Gulmini a tutti gli esperti]

  • ENG: I follow up on the question posed by Karolina Soppa. In the context of diagnostic I often confront with the evidence that different points of the paintings can show different compositions and, I would imagine, non-uniform mechanical properties. Therefore, as far as the methodological approach of the study of the properites of the artwork Is concerned, I ask myself how the extreme heterogeneity of the painting is considered when one attempts to develop interpretative or predictive models for the cracks in the support-ground-paint-finish system (included original, degradation and conservation materials). Or, simplifying, on the opportunity of carrying our measures on the tensile strenght which can really represent an artwork as a whole.

Q [by Valeria Cocchetti]

  • ENG: Considering the size layer as the support of the painting how can the materials used in the conservation treatment interfere? For instance the solvents used during the cleaning operations could modify the size proprieties as compered to its state before the treatment?

A [by Marion Mecklenburg]

  • ENG: Generally non aqueous solvents do not affect animal glues.  It is the aqueous solvent that presents the bigger problems. See the diagram below.

Questions for all experts

Q [by Cecil Krarup Andersen]

Siete d’accordo?
  • ENG: I apply 2 N/cm to my painting samples (real ones and mock-up paintings) when I test their response to RH. They always stress relax (at 50%RH) and sometimes become completely slack after I have cycled the RH. I would assume that there is a risk that this painting would continue to stretch and just become larger and larger, if it was on a constant tension frame. Would you agree?

  • ENG: This is a most useful question and an issue I stayed away from during the conference in order to keep things uncomplicated.  Stefan commented on time dependent properties briefly but now is a good time to expand on the topic a bit. Below I show some of Cecil's own data and I am sure that she is referring to this type of behavior.  She is correct in that the initial load application (Starting Points) stress relaxes (noted) until the paintings (or models of paintings) come to some true equilibrium cycling (shown).  The fact is that once the painting comes to equilibrium it continues to cycle in that mode. See Figure 8 below from the Hedley  1988 paper. In this figure the Frith primed canvas is cycling with the changing in RH continuously so this shows equilibrium. Now let's go back to Cecil's  original question about the spring loaded stretcher. If you recall, Stefan, when talking about stress relaxation of painting samples said that the strains were very small and I noted that they were within the yield points (around 0.005) of the painting materials. Now let's assume we use a spring loaded stretcher and apply a load. As stress relaxation occurs the painting expands a very small amount and the springs lose some of their load because the painting is expanding. So now the painting and the springs are a bit looser. It might be necessary to add more load if the painting is too loose.  But it might not be necessary. If you look at all of the data in figure 1, all of the samples came to equilibrium. What you might say is that samples P57, PVOH Fill;   P57, Hide Glue, Fill;  P57, PVO, Warp, could have had their loads reduced so that the loads at 75% RH were just above zero. I hope this helps.

  • ENG: I am writing on behalf of the Atelier Restauro in Malta. Regarding the topics addressed up to now, we wanted to pose a question. We are in a very damp environment, more or less 65 to 80% RH with Temperatures ranging from to 12 to 34 °C, you have talked about the use of materials such as TYLOSE and STURGEON GLUE, but in this environmental conditions are these options still valid or would you suggest other alternatives?

A seguire HPMC, HEMC ecc.
  • ENG: For the painting layer consolidation we only experimented with high humidity and medium temperatures. Certainly methyl cellulose is to be preferred, as it is the most apolar cellulose ether still soluble in water. Then HPMC, HEMC etc. I would rather not use sturgeon glue in this case.If you would like to have something even more resistant to humidity and high temperature, you can use acrylates with a high Tg-value dissolved in ethanol (without any water content), e.g. Paraloid B-72. We are currently testing some water soluble adhesives with Nanocellulose for wood gluing. The project is still running for 2-3 months.  After that we will know a bit more.

Also other institutions.
  • ENG: Maybe this is interesting for some: cellulose ethers is used by some in wood gluing (Döll 1997, restauro) and we have, depending on the direction of wood and cutting, substrate breakage. This is also shown by research projects: woodNANObonding and adhesive meshes: https://www.hawk.de/sites/default/files/2019-11/2018_konkom_poster_koni-1.pdf. Also other institutions are currently working a lot with cellulose ethers. Soon we will have more results :) AND: Many thanks for sharing all the case studies!
