Papier Peint to China≫
Second half of the 18th century
Brief description of the interventions
The work, lined with a canvas, had perimeter strips of linen canvas that were removed and replaced with new strips of polyester canvas, the frame was rectified and made suitable for containing the work in the frame. The paper support had tears and gaps that were integrated, operating from the back and from the front, accompanied by a timely consolidation of the pictorial film and watercolor reintegration.
The large format of the work and the large frame, which constrained the movements as a result of fluctuations in seasonal thermo-hygrometric values, had created tension problems with consequent small deformations of the paper surface. The aim of the proposed intervention was to preserve and restore the work by dismantling it from its original frame and transporting it to the JRC laboratories, where it underwent an in-depth structural and pictorial analysis.
