Guido Reni (1575-1642). The art of a great master: Critical Exploration and Restoration
25–26 November
Academy of Sciences, Turin
Free admission
On November 25th and 26th there will be a meeting to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Guido Reni's birth in which the Centro Conservazione Restauro La Venaria Reale will participate.
Considered ‘divine’ by his contemporaries, he was studied and imitated by classicist painters almost as much as Raphael. As often happens for great artists, his work has been reread and reinterpreted over the centuries by artists of different orientations.
In recent years, studies on Reni have made important strides forward. In 2019 the biography written by Carlo Cesare Malvasia, his first great biographer, was published in English. In 2021, new research deepened the concept of ‘classical ideal’ in his art. Important exhibitions in Frankfurt, Madrid and Rome brought the work of the extraordinary Bolognese painter to international attention.
The study days organised by the Academy of Sciences will feature scholars and restorers engaged in the most recent research on his pictorial and graphic works. The interventions will be designed to also involve the non-specialist public, making the richness and value of Reni’s art accessible to all.
Michela Cardinali, director of the Restoration Laboratories and the Centre’s School of Advanced Education, will open the meeting between the institutional greetings and moderate the interventions on the second day dedicated to one of the great masters of Italian painting.
During the meeting, the exhibition dedicated to Reni’s fortune in Piedmont and in Savoy collecting, set up in the Galleria Sabauda, will be presented. Among the works on display are masterpieces by the painter and a recently found altarpiece.
