The\u00a0Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Fondazione Centro per la Conservazione e il Restauro dei Beni Culturali \u2018La Venaria Reale\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(Venaria Reale, TO) promote, for the\u00a02025-2026<\/strong>, the project\u00a0Guidelines for the restoration of photography.\u00a0Conservation dialogue tools<\/span><\/em><\/strong>, with the aim of producing a shared document on the conservation and restoration of photography in Italy. The project, which is the result of a comparison analysis, study and research, is aimed at the enhancement of photographic works and their preventive conservation and is intended not exclusively for the benefit of the scientific community but for all operators in the sector.<\/p>\n

In October 2025, the\u00a0activities of the technical-scientific table<\/strong>\u00a0on the topics covered by the project and the\u00a0meetings of working groups<\/strong>, broken down by the four thematic areas identified: lexicon and documentation, restoration work, planned and preventive conservation,\u00a0first aid<\/em>\u00a0in crisis contexts.<\/p>\n

\nR\u00e9union\u00a0online<\/em>\u00a0the Technical-Scientific Table of the project<\/strong><\/p>\n

The meeting opens with the institutional greetings of the Director General of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture\u00a0Angelo Piero Cappello<\/strong>\u00a0and the President of the\u00a0Fondazione Centro per la Conservazione e il Restauro (CCR) dei Beni Culturali \u2018La Venaria Reale\u2019<\/span>\u00a0Alfonso Frugis<\/strong>. Following the introduction to the work by the Director of Service II \u201cContemporary Art and Photography\u201d of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity\u00a0Marta Ragozzino<\/strong>. The presentation of the project is entrusted to the Director of Restoration Laboratories and JRC Higher Education School\u00a0Michela Cardinali<\/strong>, which introduces the technical-scientific group and the technical-scientific table involved in the elaboration of the\u00a0Guidelines for the restoration of photography.\u00a0Conservation dialogue tools<\/span><\/em>. A first moment of discussion between the participants is moderated by the Head of the Operational Unit \u2018Strategic plan for the development of photography in Italy and abroad. Programmes of study, training and research in the field of photography\u2019 of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity\u00a0Carolina Italian<\/strong>.\u00a0The meeting ends with the presentation of the four thematic areas of the project, in view of the subsequent meetings of the working groups.<\/p>\n

Tuesday 11 November 2025<\/strong><\/span>
\nR\u00e9union\u00a0online<\/em>\u00a0the Technical-Scientific Table of the project<\/strong><\/p>\n

The second plenary meeting of the project\u00a0Guidelines for the restoration of photography.\u00a0Conservation dialogue tools<\/span><\/em>\u00a0It opens with the presentation of\u00a0Thematic Working Groups\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>in which the components of the technical-scientific table are divided. This is followed by a moment of discussion and choral discussion between the participants, which outline the thematic and methodological perimeters to be adopted when reconnaissance of the existing and elaboration of the\u00a0Guidelines<\/em>. Particular attention is paid to deontological, lexical and chronological aspects, in addition to tools for collecting conservative data.\u00a0The meeting continued with the introduction of\u00a0Federica Del\u00eca<\/strong>, researcher and restorer selected to support the study and research activities of the project. In this context, Federica Del\u00eca presents a tool she has put in place to monitor workflows, the progress of project activities and the achievement of objectives. The work concludes with the preparation of the operational meetings of the thematic working groups and the launch of research activities.<\/p>\n

Thursday 11, Friday 12 and Monday 15 December 2025
\n<\/strong><\/span>Meeting of the Thematic Working Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n

From 11 to 15 December 2025, the restricted operational meetings<\/strong> who saw the protagonists 4 Thematic Working Groups<\/strong> the project \u2018Guidelines for the Restoration of Photography. Conservation dialogue tools\u201d. These sessions marked a fundamental step from the moment of preliminary research to the concrete planning of activities.<\/p>\n

During the respective meetings, each Working Group presented and discussed the bibliographic and documentary materials collected for each of the 4 areas of the project: lexicon and documentation; restoration work; planned and preventive conservation; First aid. On this basis, the professionals involved have defined specific themes and contents to be included in the Guidelines<\/em>, as well as the specific work programme for each Group and its time objectives.<\/p>\n

A central aspect of the meetings was theidentification of cross-cutting issues.<\/strong> The discussion has led to the emergence of points of common interest between the different Working Groups, which will be the subject of further reflection during the plenary meetings, to ensure a coherent and integrated overview for the entire project.<\/p>\n

Wednesday 17 December 2025<\/strong><\/span>
\nR\u00e9union\u00a0online<\/em>\u00a0the Technical-Scientific Table of the project<\/strong><\/p>\n

The meeting was dedicated to discussing some of the central themes for the project, including the specialist vocabulary, the reference regulatory framework and the technical documentation currently available.
\nThe discussion then focused on the structure of the future Guidelines, with the aim of making them a clear, shared and user-friendly tool. An approach consisting of critical contributions, in-depth thematic fact sheets and an adequate photographic apparatus has been outlined, designed to meet the needs of a plurality of professionals involved in the conservation and restoration of photography.<\/p>\n

The next stages of work include the preparation of a proposal for an organic index, which will be developed by the representatives of the Working Groups as a first step towards the start of the drafting phase.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t

Restricted Operational Meeting of Thematic Working Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n

Project activities have made significant progress in the first weeks of the new year. On 15 and 16 January, new restricted meetings of the thematic Working Tables were held.
\nThe meetings focused on sharing the proposed index of the Guidelines and on the precise identification of the topics to be included in the final document.
\nThanks to the contribution of the experts of the individual Groups, the collection of additions and scientific reviews has been launched, a fundamental step in view of the imminent start of the drafting phase.<\/p>\n

During the sessions, a first session was also conducted on the operational division of the drafting of the texts and on the most suitable editorial format, elements that will soon be submitted to the institutional representatives of the project.
\nThe path towards the definition of National Guidelines for the conservation of photographic heritage therefore continues with intensity, consolidating the dialogue between the different professional profiles involved.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t

From Monday 16 to Friday 20 February 2026<\/strong><\/span>
\nMeetings\u00a0online<\/em>\u00a0the Thematic Working Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the third round of meetings of the four thematic working groups, which took place from 16 to 20 February 2026, the structure of the\u00a0Guidelines<\/em>, consolidating the contributions shared in previous months. The central objective is to enhance interdisciplinarity when drafting content, making use of complementarity between the various professionals involved. This rereading is preparatory to the start of the actual drafting phase, aiming at a final document that can combine scientific exhaustiveness and ease of consultation. In parallel with the development of the content, the organisational details of the\u00a0workshops<\/em>\u00a0Open to the public on Wednesday 11 March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t

Wednesday 8 April 2026<\/strong><\/span>
\nR\u00e9union online<\/em> the Technical-Scientific Table of the project<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fourth plenary meeting opened with an assessment of the outcome of the seminar on 11 March, which was recognised as a particularly significant moment of public discussion. The focus is then on the final publication of the\u00a0Guidelines<\/em>, with updates on the procedure for identifying the publishing house and sharing the final structure of the work. With a view to further enhancing and clarifying the link between photography and contemporary art, the inclusion of contributions dedicated to the point of view of the contemporary photographer and curator is agreed. The discussion then focuses on some sections and significant elements of the\u00a0Guidelines<\/em>, in particular on the terminology used to structure certain descriptive sections. Finally, the distribution of the technical iconographic apparatus, defined also thanks to the contribution of the public and private entities involved in the project, is presented and discussed. The meeting concludes with the sharing of the following phases of work: the final revision of the descriptive sections in view of the fourth round of operational meetings of the working groups scheduled for May and, subsequently, the fifth and final round of meetings at the beginning of June, preparatory to the delivery of the texts and the launch of the editorial review.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n
