As part of the broader NANOMAT project, the Centro Conservazione e Restauro "La Venaria Reale" and the Department of Chemistry of Turin University conducted a scientific project to test the use of LASER in place of conventional mechanical and/or chemical cleaning methods in the field of conservation.
The project aimed to define operative procedures for cleaning (optimal parameters and determination of substrata damage threshold) and to construct a database accessible to operators in the field.
The tests were conducted on a number of the materials most frequently subject to conservation at the Centro’s laboratories, to verify the applicability of the LASER tool, assessing its efficiency on the different types of material and its advantages over traditional methods and tools.
The test samples (canvases, metals, tapestries, gilded works and wooden materials) were designed to reproduce stratigraphies of ancient, modern and contemporary works, based on historical sources, and chronologically define the characteristics of the selected materials.
