Italy-Egypt cooperation programme
Training on the Science of Materials for the conservation of museum collections
The aim of the project was to support the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in its development as a centre of excellence for the conservation of Islamic arts and to support the capacity building of the participating museums selected by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in Egypt (MoTA), namely the MIA, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC), the Gayer-Anderson Museum and the Manial Palace.
It was therefore designed ad hoc and provided training distance and in the presence of the duration of 2 weeks on Materials Science for 5 Egyptian professionals (July 2022), conservators and curators selected by the MoTA. The training programme pursued three main educational objectives:
- identification and sharing of specific needs related to advanced vocational training and skills development
- integration of participants' skills and experiences with new educational tools and systems in the field of cultural heritage conservation
- enhancement and integration of different skills in the analysis of museum exhibits.
Lessons were given by conservators and conservation scientists, together with JRC professionals directly involved in restoration activities, such as conservation project managers, art historians, photographers, graphic designers and restorers.
