Brief description of the intervention

The possibility of re-reading the conservation events that affected the work also through the archival research conducted by Giovanni Agosti and Jacopo Stoppa on the occasion of the exhibition Hidden treasures. Works of art returned to the communities of Varesotto (Castello di Masnago, Musei Civici di Varese, 4 December 2022-26 March 2023), provided key information to tidy up and decipher the data that emerged during the restoration.

Visual analyses, scientific investigations and historical data confirm that the painting has undergone numerous interventions, mainly aimed at remedying the continuous manifestation of defects in the adhesion of the pictorial film and the consequent loss of original material, degradation phenomena attributable both to the environmental conditions of conservation and to the technical-executive characteristics and materials used by the artist and/or to the combination of these factors.
