Adoration of the Child, a Holy Bishop and a Holy Knight; Predella with Christ and the Apostles, the beginning of the 16th century
Master of the Pala Tana (Gomar from Antwerp?) and Piedmontese workshop

Brief description of the intervention

The surveys carried out, together with the study of the historical documentation and the technical reflections carried out with the collaboration of the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Metropolitan City of Turin, provided essential data for the restoration of the three tables and the predella made possible in 2022 thanks to the support of the CRT Foundation as part of the ‘Restauri-Cantieri diffusi’ call.

The two saints, purchased in 1932 by the Civic Museum at the Turin antiquarian Pietro Accorsi, had been photographed on several occasions by Secondo Pia at the Turin archbishopric together with the central table with the Adoration of the Child and the predella, suggesting that the four tables were part of a single whole, reassembled by Vittorio Viale in 1934. The restoration carried out by the Center has made it possible to recover the delicate original colors in the incarnates and to confirm the relationship between the tables distinguished by similar blue backgrounds. The intervention has made it possible to return a work that has so far remained in the deposits of the Turin museum, representing an important opportunity to enrich the knowledge of the artistic landscape that marked the ancient Duchy of Savoy in the passage between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
After the intervention, the reassembled triptych has been on display at Palazzo Madama since 2024.
