Conserving Canvas – Workshop
As part of the Conserving Canvas initiative promoted by the Getty Foundation, the Centre organised a practical workshop for visiting conservators specialized in the restoration of paintings on canvas.
The workshop, focused on the structural treatment of the paintings on two sides, took place in the Restoration Laboratories of the JRC in 2 different Editions:
- First edition:
dates: 7-18 June 2021
Participants: Valerio Garofalo, Alice Tognoni, Martina Quadrelli - Second edition:
dates: 18-29 October 2021
Participants: Joanna Strombek, Luz Vanasco, Daniella Serrano
The technical-practical activity concerned in particular the banner of Giulio Cesare Procaccini of the Pinacoteca di Brera, a complex case of canvas painted on both sides that could provide theoretical and practical tools to address the issue of compensation for lacerations on double paintings.
PROGRAMME
The workshop program included two weeks of practical and theoretical activities concerning structural interventions on canvases painted on two sides.
During the first week, after an introduction on Procaccini’s work and its conservation problems, visiting conservators tested materials and methods for the compensation of lacerations on auditions and participated in seminars with experts in the field such as Petra Demuth, Hannah Flock and Matteo Rossi Doria.
In the second week they were able to put into practice what they had previously learned by directly confronting themselves with the complex case study of the Procaccini banner, on which they worked side by side with the restorers of the Center.
