The Fondazione Centro Conservazione e Restauro dei Beni Culturali ‘La Venaria Reale’ and the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture promote, for the 2025-2026, the project Guidelines for the restoration of photography. Conservation dialogue tools, with the aim of producing a shared document on the conservation and restoration of photography in Italy. The project, which is the result of a comparison analysis, study and research, is aimed at the enhancement of photographic works and their preventive conservation and is intended not exclusively for the benefit of the scientific community but for all operators in the sector.

The project is part of the institutional mission of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity, in particular within the framework of the Strategic photography development plan in Italy and abroad for the three-year period 2024-2026 It is divided into two main macro-areas: the first linked to the knowledge and preservation of the nation’s current photographic cultural heritage and the other to the support and promotion of the Italian photographic sector.

The project is divided into several phases: the identification of experts, the establishment of a technical-scientific table, the organisation of meetings of working groups divided by thematic area, the analysis of scientific literature and legislation on photographic restoration, bibliographic reconnaissance, the organisation of a workshops with publication and dissemination of the results, the organisation of a conference dedicated to the definition of Guidelines and subsequent publication of the acts.
