The webinar, held by Prof. Josep Bracons – art historian and professor at the Higher School of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage of Catalonia (ESCRBCC) – will be divided into two separate in-depth sessions, each focusing on a topic of crucial importance for understanding the role of the city of Barcelona in the history of art and urban planning in the 20th and 21st centuries.
In the first part of the meeting, the focus will be on the strategic importance of the Picasso Museum within the European museum landscape, with particular reference to its role in the process of cultural internationalisation of the Catalan city. It will address how the creation and development of the museum has contributed substantially to the definition of Barcelona’s contemporary cultural identity, projecting it as a focal point in the modern art circuit.
The second part will focus on one of the most discussed architectural icons of the Barcelona urban landscape: the Sagrada Família. The intervention will focus on the urban implications arising from the completion of Antoni Gaudí’s famous project, examining the tensions between heritage protection, urban planning and transformation of public space. The main critical issues that have emerged in recent decades will be addressed, from the controversies related to the completion of the project to the urban issues it raises, through a reflection on the delicate balance between urban development and conservation of the architectural heritage.
