The protection and enhancement of cultural heritage are evolving thanks to HERITALISE, a European project integrating advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to improve documentation and preservation of cultural heritage.
The project HERITALISE (HORIZON-CL2-2023-HERITAGE-ECCCH-01) started its activities with the first internal meeting on 8 January, followed by the official kick-off on 24 January at Sant Cugat del Valles, a few kilometres from Barcelona, in which the ‘La Venaria Reale’ Conservation and Restoration Centre took part.

The initiative aims to transform the way cultural heritage is documented and studied, using innovative digital tools and AI-based solutions. The main objective is to develop Advanced Digitization Techniques Capable of capturing both visible elements and hidden and internal details of cultural goods. By integrating diverse data and leveraging artificial intelligence, the project will make the processes of acquisition and processing of 3D models more efficient, transforming raw information into structured and valuable knowledge.

The project will last four years and involves others. 16 partner (including the Department of Architecture and Design-DAD, the Consorzio Delle Residenze Reali Sabaude and the JRC) from seven European countries: in addition to Italy, Spain, Scotland, Belgium, Cyprus, the Netherlands and Malta.

The project will use four demonstration sites located in Italy (Ray of Venaria Reale), Scotland (West Highland Museum and Timespan Museum) and Malta (Villa Portelli) which will have the value of case studies to test the results of the research. The data collected will contribute significantly to the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH), a scalable web-based platform, designed to enable European cultural institutions to share, access and develop enriched digital resources, thus fostering conservation and research.

Thanks to HERITALISE, the digitisation of cultural heritage will enter a new era, in which information will be more accessible, structured and easily searchable. The adoption of new technologies will broaden knowledge of the past, while preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
