19 September 2025

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the death of Guglielmo Caccia, known as the Moncalvo - one of the protagonists of late Mannerism between Piedmont and Lombardy - the JRC La Venaria Reale has restored two paintings that today enrich the path of the Galleria Sabauda of the Royal Museums of Turin.

The works, acquired by the Directorate-General for Museums, depict Saints George and Maurizio on horseback and make it possible to fully appreciate the artist’s refined technique.

Interventions

The restoration of the Saint Maurice (disambiguation revealed that the painting was originally larger as evidenced by the analysis of the lower edge where traces of the saint’s name and a noble coat of arms remain. The intervention ensured the recovery of the uniformity of the surface of the canvas characterized by the lozenges (or diamond) armour used by the painter to give particular materiality to the work.

The Saint George showed signs of alterations due to previous restorations that had changed the colour and appearance of the painting. The removal of old repaintings has allowed the recovery of iconographic details not yet visible, such as the left ear of the horse. The new chromatic interpretation of the work has highlighted details of the execution technique such as the fine and parallel brushstroke of the artist.

Thanks to the Directorate General for Museums who wanted to highlight these interventions also on the institutional website: http://musei.beniculturali.it/notizie/notifiche/le-collezioni-dei-musei-reali-di-torino-si-arricchiscono-di-due-importanti-dipinti-di-guglielmo-caccia-detto-il-moncalvo
