49-AL-2006_Nichelino, Stupinigi Hunting Lodge, J. Robert, Clock, inv. 479
Facilitated description:
Josué Robert made this black and gold watch in the early 1800s.
The clock is kept at the Palazzina di Caccia in Stupinigi.
The Centro Conservazione e Restauro La Venaria Reale completed the restoration of the clock in 2008 after its discovery. The watch was stolen in 2004.
The restorers glued the top (decoration of the upper part).
They eliminated the black color from the wooden structure of the watch.
The clock was in fact green and in later years it was repainted in black.
The golden feet have been reinforced with stucco (a layer of plaster and glue).
The golden parts had gaps (missing parts).
Eventually the restorers supplemented (filled) the gilding gaps with gold sheets.
Abstract of the intervention:
The restoration of the watch by Josué Robert was completed in 2008 under the supervision of Pinin Brambilla Barcilon. The intervention was carried out on the occasion of the discovery of the nucleus of works stolen from the hunting lodge of Stupinigi in 2004. After the restoration, the work was relocated to the Palazzina.
Restoration
Analysis of the work showed that the watch case was repainted in black over the original green colour. The restoration work involved cleaning and consolidation operations (especially at the level of the detached ridge). The golden feet were plastered with plaster and glue because they presented falls of preparation. Finally, the additions of coated gilding with earth were carried out.
