Facilitated description:
The portrait of Mary Adelaide of Savoy is a painting on canvas made in 1650-1699.
The painting is kept in the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi.
The Centro Conservazione e Restauro La Venaria Reale restored the painting and the frame in 2007 after the discovery of the work. The painting was stolen in 2004.
The restorers carried out a cleaning (cleaning the surface from the dirt deposited over time or from the layers of old restorations).
The painting had pictorial gaps (lack) of color.
The restorers carried out the pictorial integration (reconstruction of the gaps with the color).
They applied a protective paint all over the painting.
They cleaned the back of the painting and the gilded wooden frame.
They filled the gilding gaps (lack) of the frame with gold dust.
In the end they painted the frame to protect it from the sun's rays and dust.
Abstract of the intervention:
The restoration of the Portrait of Mary Adelaide of Savoy was completed in 2007 under the supervision of Pinin Brambilla Barcilon. The intervention was carried out on the occasion of the discovery of the nucleus of works stolen from the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi in 2004. After the restoration, the work was relocated to the Palazzina.
Restoration
The intervention involved a superficial cleaning of the paint from dirt deposits. The color lifts (especially in the neckline and arm area) have been fixed to the support. For the aesthetic presentation were made the pictorial integrations with paint colors of the small gaps on the edges and at the neckline and arm. The final painting was carried out with a resin applied by spray on the whole painting. The back of the support and the frame were then cleaned. The gilding gaps of the frame were supplemented with gold powder. Finally, a protective painting was carried out on the frame.
