Facilitated description:
The spittoon is a painted wooden furniture used to spit tobacco.
Pietro Piffetti built the spittoon between 1734-1755.
The spittoon is kept at the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi.
The Conservation and Restoration Centre "La Venaria Reale" (CCR) restored the spittoon in 2009.
The restorers have rebuilt some parts of the spittoon feet with walnut wood.
They cleaned the spittoon and eliminated the old restoration work.
In the end, they laid out a product and paint to protect the spittoon from sunlight and dust.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The restoration of the Spittacchiera di Piffetti, kept at the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, involved the integration of the feet carved in acanthus leaves with walnut wood and the reassembly with glue of animal origin. Subsequently, a cleaning of the internal and external surface was carried out and the previous restoration interventions present at the level of the phytomorphic decoration were removed by scalpel. To protect the product, a light film of microcrystalline wax was spread on the wooden surface and paint on the golden backgrounds.
