Facilitated description:
The screen consists of 6 panels of fabric and a gilded wooden structure.
Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo made the screen in 1786.
The screen is kept at the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi, in the antechamber of the Queen's apartment.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the screen in 2017.
The restorers cleaned the screen of the substances that covered the color of the wooden structure.
They filled the wooden gaps with stucco (plaster and glue).
They filled the lacks of gilding with watercolor colors.
They rebuilt some small wooden decorations.
In the end they painted the screen to protect it from the sun's rays and dust.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The restoration of the screen in the antechamber of the Queen’s apartment focused mainly on removing deposits that blackened the white colour and obfuscated the metal foil. Mechanical and chemical cleaning of the surface from surface deposits was then performed. The largest gaps have been grouted and connected with watercolor veils. The stains of the pictorial layer were lowered through watercolor pencils. The golden leaf, taking into account the good state of conservation, has been the subject of minimal plastering and retouching of abrasions with watercolor colors. The integration of the missing carving elements was carried out with silicone rubbers and two-component resins.
On the screen, the relocation of the glazing for the most important gaps has been proposed again.
Finally, a protective varnish was applied to the entire surface.
