Facilitated description:
Deianira Tempted by Fury is a painting on canvas.
The painting shows Deianira receiving from Fury (evil deity representing vengeance) a bloody robe.
The painter Paul Rubens painted the painting in the late 1600s.
The painting is kept at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
The restorers of the Centro Conservazione e Restaur La Venaria Reale restored the painting in 2008.
The restorers saw that the lining (reinforcement canvas behind the painting) was in good condition.
The restorers cleaned up behind the painting.
Then they cleaned the front of the painting: They eliminated the yellowed paint and some of the paintings from the old restoration.
They replaced the grouting (layer of plaster and glue that serves to fill the color gaps) with new grouting.
They filled the color gaps with watercolors and paint colors.
Eventually they painted the painting to protect it from the sun's rays and dust.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
In agreement with the Works Department, it was decided not to intervene on the support, leaving intact the existing lining, which is in good conservation condition. The restoration of the painting has therefore provided for the cleaning of the back with vacuum cleaner and wishab rubber. The pictorial film was cleaned by totally removing the altered paint and the most recent retouches, while the oldest repaintings were left, located on the bust of Deianira and in some areas along the edges. The painting was then painted with a brush and intervened on the groutings no longer suitable, removing them and replacing them with other new ones based on Bologna plaster and rabbit glue. It was then proceeded with the pictorial reintegration with watercolor bases with veils of paint colors for the restoration. In addition, punctual reintegrations were carried out in the particularly abraded areas and slight veils in the parts of the vertical erosions. Finally, the painting was painted with a synthetic paint.
