Restoration report and photographic documentation relating to the intervention carried out on n. 2 paintings on canvas, constituting two theatrical curtains, works by Giovanni Battista Garberini.
Facilitated description
The works "The Ticino Festival" and "The Siege of Vigevano" by Giovanni Battista Garberini are two paintings on canvas from about 1871-1873 preserved at the Teatro Cagnoni in Vigevano.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the works in 2001.
The two canvases (painted on large canvas), used as theatrical curtains, were very damaged by smog, dust and old restorations.
Tempera painting was degraded with abrasions (scratches on the surface due to rubbing) and loss of color.
The restorer fixed the raised parts, cleaned the surfaces and transported the canvases to the laboratory.
It removed the old patches and consolidated the support (make the surfaces more stable).
He carried out the grouting of the gaps (a white layer of plaster and glue that extends inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
He lightened and readapted the repaintings and reintegrated the painting (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with watercolors.
He relocated the curtains to the theater with a new lifting system.
The restorer recommended periodic checks to maintain the stability of the works.
