Photographic documentation relating to the phase preceding the restoration of the painting Madonna with Child and Saints by Giovanni Giacomo De Alladio (Macrino d'Alba).
Facilitated description
The work "Madonna with Child and Saints" by Giovanni Giacomo De Alladio called Macrino d'Alba, today known as "Madonna with Child between San Bernardino, Santa Chiara and Blessed Cristoforo Maccasolio", is a painting on panel of about 1502 preserved in the Cathedral of Vigevano.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1970.
The support had dirt deposits and stains due to moisture.
The painting was dirty and the thick layer of paint was altered in hue.
The pictorial film presented lifts especially in the dark parts of the background and on the clothes of the characters depicted.
The restorer cleaned and disinfected the support.
He redecorated (application of a reinforcement canvas on the back of a painting) the painting and replaced the frame (structure that supports the canvas of the painting).
It eliminated some repaintings, but kept those that were useful as a basis for additions (reconstructions of the material or color of missing parts).
He carried out the grouting of the gaps (a white layer of plaster and glue that extends inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
He then performed the pictorial integration (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with hatch technique (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part) and with veils (transparent layer of color).
