Photographic documentation relating to the intervention performed on the Triptych depicting the Deposition of Christ, St. James Major, St. John the Baptist (inv. 208, cat. 22; inv. 219, cat. 24; inv. 221, cat. 25). The work, initially thought to be by Macrino d'Alba, was later attributed to a 16th-century Sardinian Catalan master. The photographs illustrate the first cleaning and consolidation work carried out on the paintings.
Facilitated description
The works "Deposition of Christ", today known as "Christ deposed with Our Lady, St. Mary Magdalene, St. John the Evangelist, St. Mary of Cleophas, Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathea, a holy bishop and a Franciscan saint", "St. James Major" and "St. John the Baptist" are paintings on wood from about 1500-1530.
The paintings, attributed to a Sardinian Catalan Master, are part of a triptych (set of three panels painted for an altar connected by a frame) and are kept at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the works in 1973-1975 and then again in 2005.
The panels of the paintings are made of hard wood and were in good condition.
The surface was covered with dust and organic sediments.
The pictorial film had greyed paint and had lifts, especially in the central panel.
The restorer has cleaned and consolidated (make the surfaces more stable) the painting.
He recovered the altered touch-ups and the gold bottom.
He then carried out the plastering (a white layer of plaster and glue that stretches inside a lack and that forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions) and the final touches.
