Restoration report (07/1991-09/1991) and photographic documentation relating to the restoration of the painting Nativity of Jesus by Federico Barocci.
Facilitated description
The work "Nativity of Jesus" by Federico Barocci, now known as "Nativity" or "Nativity", is a painting on canvas from 1598 preserved at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1991.
Previously, the painting had been transported (transferred from an old medium to a new one) from the original canvas to a new canvas.
The frame (structure that supports the canvas of the painting) was in good condition and the restorer kept it.
In the past, other restorers had painted the painting.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla removed the old paint that had yellowed to better see the original colors of the painting.
He carried out the grouting of the gaps (a white layer of plaster and glue that extends inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
He made the additions (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with hatch technique (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part) and veils (transparent layer of color).
