Restoration report and photographic documentation relating to the intervention carried out on the painting Nativity by Luca Signorelli. The photographs illustrate the phases before and during the restoration.
Facilitated description:
The work "Natività" by Luca Signorelli is a painting on canvas of about 1497-1498 preserved at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1983.
Originally, the work was painted on a wooden panel.
In the past the painting was transferred to canvas because it was in poor condition and had undergone many restorations.
The last major previous restoration dates back to the 1800s, when a restorer covered the entire painting with a layer of paint to hide the previous damage.
Over time, the paint layer turned yellow, causing the painting to lose brightness.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla has cleaned the layers of paint added in the past.
He carried out the grouting of the gaps (a white layer of plaster and glue that extends inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
The restoration also involved the frame.
