Restoration report (08/2009) and photographic documentation related to the restoration of the painting Virgin of the Rocks by Andrea Bianchi called Vespino.

It also contains: copy of the correspondence between the Superintendence and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana concerning the issue of the authorization for the restoration work (11/06/2009-30/07/2009).

Facilitated description 

 

The work ‘Virgin of the Rocks’ by Andrea Bianchi, known as Vespino, is a painting on panel dating from around 1611-1618 and is kept at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 2009 under the direction of Mariolina Olivari.
The work is a copy of the original by Leonardo Da Vinci.
Through analysis with ultraviolet light (light beam that allows you to see details not visible in natural lighting conditions; is mainly used to understand the degradation of different materials) has studied previous restorations.
Some small parts of the color of the painting were raised.
During a previous restoration, the restorers had applied a protective varnish on the painting.
The paint was very yellowed and did not allow to see correctly the colors of the work.
The aim of Pinin Brambilla’s restoration was to re-adhere the raised parts of colour.
The cleaning of the yellowed paint and the layers of dirt allowed the correct vision of the colors and details of the painting.
