Restoration report (06/06/1986-10/11/1986) and photographic documentation relating to the intervention on the painting Madonna of the Candle by Carlo Crivelli.

Facilitated description

The work "Madonna della Candeletta" by Carlo Crivelli, today also known as "Madonna with Child and Saints Peter and Paul, Ansovino and Jerome", is a painting on panel of 1488-1490 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1986.
He cleaned and treated the painting against xylophagous insects (insects that feed on wood and damage the work).
He carefully removed the paint, finding damage and abrasions (scratches on the surface due to rubbing) from old restorations.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla has consolidated (make the surfaces more stable) the wooden support and the color layer.
He then integrated the gaps (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with hatch technique (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part).
The restorer has decided to keep the reconstruction of the hand of the Madonna.
