Restoration report (02/02/1987-10/03/1987) and photographic documentation relating to the intervention on the painting St. Stephen's Dispute Among the Doctors in the Sanhedrin by Vittore Carpaccio.
Facilitated description
The work "Disputa di Santo Stefano tra i Dottori nel Sanedrio" by Vittore Carpaccio, now known as "Disputa di Santo Stefano nel Sanedrio", is a painting on canvas from 1514 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1987.
He cleaned the back of the painting and removed the frame (structure that supports the painting canvas).
He cleaned the painting surface, removing dirt, old painting and old retouching.
The restorer has plastered the gaps (a white layer of plaster and glue that extends inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
He carried out the pictorial integrations (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with the hatch technique (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part) and with veils (transparent layer of color) in the abrasions (scratches on the surface due to rubbing).
