Restoration report (26/10/1987-30/11/1987) and photographic documentation relating to the intervention on the paintings View of the San Marco basin from Punta della Dogana e View of the Grand Canal towards Punta della Dogana, from Campo San Ivo by Giovanni Antonio Canal (Canaletto).
Works supervision: Rosalba Tardito Amerio.
Facilitated description
The works "View of the San Marco basin from the Punta della Dogana" and "View of the Grand Canal towards the Punta della Dogana, from Campo San Vio" by Giovanni Antonio Canal (Canaletto) are paintings on canvas from 1740-1745 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the works in 1987 under the direction of Rosalba Tardito Amerio.
The restorer thinned the surface paint, finding another layer of older, amber paint, which was removed.
The restorer revealed large areas of abraded sky (scratched) from previous cleaning (cleaning the surface of the work of art of the dirt deposited over time), with serious damage to the pictorial film.
He integrated the gaps (reconstructed the material or color of the missing parts) and rebalanced the abrasions (scratches on the surface due to rubbing) in the background.
