Restoration report (19/01/1988-20/01/1988) and photographic documentation relating to the phase prior to the intervention on the painting Adoration of the Magi by Stefano from Verona.
Facilitated description
The work "Adoration of the Magi" by Stefano da Verona is a painting on panel of about 1435 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1988 under the direction of Sandrina Bandera.
The restorer consolidated (make the surfaces more stable) the painting and fixed small scales of color raised.
He cleaned the painting, removing particles (deposits of dust and dirt, due to atmospheric agents) and previous retouching.
He discovered that the original color was depleted, especially in incarnates such as the face and hands of the Madonna.
The blue mantle of the Madonna and the lower part of the painting were compromised.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla kept the repaintings along the margins.
He putty the gaps (a white layer of gypsum and glue that stretches inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
He made the additions (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with veils (transparent layer of color) watercolor.
The restorer treated the wooden support and applied a painting.
