Restoration report (1982-1983) and photographic documentation relating to the intervention carried out on the painting depicting the Deposition by Gaudenzio Ferrari. The photographs illustrate the phases before and during the restoration of the work.
Works supervision: Rosaria Tardito Amerio.
Facilitated description
The work "Deposition" by Gaudenzio Ferrari, now known as "Lamentation on the Dead Christ" is a painting on panel of about 1538-1540 preserved at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1982-1983 under the direction of Rosalba Tardito Amerio.
The three previous restorations had removed veils (transparent layers of color), mainly in the angel's mantle, in the background and in the sky.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla has consolidated (make the surfaces more stable) the raised color scales.
Removed the surface paint revealing the original color.
He removed the repaintings with a scalpel.
After cleaning (cleaning the surface of the work of art from dirt deposited over time), damage from colour loss and abrasions (scratches on the surface due to rubbing) emerged.
