Restoration report and photographic documentation related to the intervention on the painting St. Jerome by Cesare Da Sesto.

Facilitated description

The work "S. Gerolamo" by Cesare Da Sesto, now known as "San Gerolamo penitente", is a painting on panel of about 1515-1520 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1992.
In agreement with the management, the restorer decided not to modify the structure of the support, removing only two horizontal crossbars.
He cleaned the support and treated it with a solution against xylophagous insects (insects that feed on wood and damage the work).
It stopped the color lifts.
Cleaning (cleaning the surface of the artwork from dirt deposited over time) revealed altered shades of the repaintings.
The restorer removed previous paints and repaintings, finding a green color near the head of St. Jerome.
Performed the pictorial integration of gaps (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with veils (transparent layer of color).
