Restoration report (07/1993) and photographic documentation relating to the intervention on the painting Expulsion of Rebel Angels from Heaven by Francesco Maffei.
Works supervision: Mariolina Olivari.
Facilitated description
The work "Expulsion of the rebel angels from paradise" by Francesco Maffei is a painting on canvas of 1656 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1993 under the direction of Mariolina Olivari.
It removed the canvas from the frame (structure that supports the canvas of the painting) for transport, carrying out velinatura operations (application of a thin layer of Japanese paper that stops the possible fall of color flakes and allows operations to move and restore the work safely) on the junctions and falls of color.
Reinforced the canvas along the edges.
He removed the stucco and repaintings, revealing the parallel marks of the canvas folds and horizontal lines at the top of the painting.
After cleaning (cleaning the surface of the work of art of the dirt deposited over time), it carried out the integration of gaps (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) and lacerations (splits, cuts or tears of the material).
