Restoration report (03/04/1985-10/09/1987) and photographic documentation relating to the intervention carried out on the painting depicting the the Dead Christ by Francesco Raibolini (France).
Works supervision: Giovanna Galante Garrone.
Facilitated description
The work "Lamentation on the Dead Christ with Sant'Alberto degli Abati" by Francesco Raibolini called Francia, now known as "Deposition of Christ in the Sepulchre", is a painting on canvas from 1515 preserved at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1985-1987 under the direction of Giovanna Galante Garrone.
The restorer has removed the plexiglass structure to support the table.
He assessed the damage to the wood, finding serious infestations of xylophagous insects (insects that feed on the wood and damage the work).
He cleaned the painting and repaired the missing parts of the board.
He carried out the grouting of the gaps (a white layer of plaster and glue that extends inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
The restorer has replaced the plexiglass support with an aluminum frame (structure that supports the canvas of the painting).
He performed the pictorial integration (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with hatch technique (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part) in the gaps (missing parts) and with veils (transparent layer of color) in the abrasions (scratches on the surface due to rubbing).
