Restoration report (02/1994-10/1994) and photographic documentation relating to the intervention on the painting Saint Bernardino of Siena and angels by Andrea Mantegna.
Works supervision: Mariolina Olivari.
Facilitated description
The work "San Bernardino da Siena e angeli" by Andrea Mantegna is a painting on canvas of 1469 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1994 under the direction of Mariolina Olivari.
The restorer cleaned the painting, revealing shades closer to the original, but also varying degrees of deterioration.
He removed some of the repaintings to preserve the definition of angels' faces.
The analyses showed a very thin and oily original layer.
The restorer carried out the pictorial restoration with paint colors to lighten the differences in tone.
