Restoration report (02/07/1986-10/11/1986) graphic and photographic documentation relating to the intervention carried out on the painting depicting the Beheading of the Baptist by Daniele da Volterra.
Works supervision: Giovanna Galante Garrone.
Simplified description
The work "Decollazione del Battista" by Daniele Ricciarelli (from Volterra) is a painting on panel of about 1550-1551 preserved at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1986 under the direction of Giovanna Galante Garrone.
The restorer removed the dirt and spread a consolidant (product to make the surfaces more stable) on the whole table.
He stared at the flakes of color that had risen.
After removing the dirt and paint, he eliminated the touch-ups on the hair, blue robe and blue dress.
The restorer also partially removed the face of the female figure.
It replaced the groutings (a white layer of gypsum and glue that stretches inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions) in the gaps (missing parts).
He carried out the pictorial integration (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) in hatch (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part).
In areas with abrasions (scratches on the surface due to rubbing) has integrated (reconstructed the material or color of missing parts) with glazes (transparent layer of color).
