Restoration report (06/1997-11/1997) and photographic documentation related to the intervention on the painting Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints by Bartolomeo Montagna.
Works supervision: Mariolina Olivari.
Facilitated description
The work "Madonna enthroned with child and saints" by Bartolomeo Cincani called Montagna, now known as "Madonna with Child enthroned between Saints Andrea, Monica, Ursula and Sigismund", is a painting on canvas of 1499 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
The restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1997 under the direction of Mariolina Olivari.
He began with the analysis of colors and state of preservation.
During the cleaning and removal of dust and paint, colors and details emerged.
A sepia preparatory drawing was found.
Removing the repaintings and groutings (a white layer of plaster and glue that stretches inside a gap and forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions), the restorer recovered part of the original color, but some areas were very fragile.
After cleaning (cleaning the surface of the work of art of the dirt deposited over time), the restorer filled the gaps (missing parts) with glazes (transparent layer of color) and hatch technique (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part).
The restorer also cleaned and retouched the frame.
