In the end, they put a protective substance on the iron parts.

Abstract of the intervention:

The clock, owned by the Civic Museum of Ancient Art of Turin (Palazzo Madama), was granted on loan to the Reggi di Venaria for the exhibition in the permanent visit route.

Restoration

The restoration began with the removal of incoherent atmospheric particulate matter and greasy dirt from the entire surface by mechanical (brush and vacuum cleaner) and chemical (buffer ethanol) methods. Subsequently, the protective relating to the previous restoration was eliminated. In agreement with the Works Directorate, the surface oxidation of the brass was removed only at the most obvious points, in particular on the smooth parts where the dominant chromatic degradation could have been misleading for the aesthetic reading of the product. In addition, the foil parts detached or raised by quick-setting epoxy resin infiltration were repositioned. Finally, a protective was applied on the iron band.
