9mc01-TA-2019_Torino, Museo Civico d'Arte Antica - Palazzo Madama, F. Charrin, Young woman in the garden, inv. 518
Facilitated description:
Young woman in the garden is a small painting on ivory (material that is obtained from the tusks of elephants).
Fanny Charrin painted the painting in about 1810. The painting is kept at the Civic Museum of Ancient Art in Turin (Palazzo Madama).
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the painting in 2019.
The restorers dismantled the painting from the frame. They put the painting under weights to flatten it.
They cleaned the painting from dust and glued all parts of the painting (the ivory tablet to the two side paper strips).
They glued the raised color parts.
They filled the color gaps with paint.
They replaced the protective glass and mounted the glass without having it rubbed against the painting.
In the end they cleaned the frame and glued the detached pieces.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
Restoration of the miniature Young woman in the garden, inv. 518 began with the disassembly from the frame and the mechanical removal of the pieces of adhesive that bound the miniature to the glass. Subsequently the work was left under weight to promote the restoration of flatness and was cleaned with soft brushes and microaspirator. The three parts that make up the support (central part in ivory and two lateral parts in paper) were then re-adhesive and the flakes of de-adhesive pictorial film were fixed. A Japanese paper stand has been added to the right side of the back. The pictorial retouching was performed with resin-based paint colors, sometimes added with other types of resins to achieve a more defined gloss effect. Finally, the constraint system has been re-adjusted: the glass has been replaced and spacers (in cardboard on the sides and teflon on the lower and upper margins) have been inserted between this and the miniature to prevent abrasion and other degrading.
Frame
Chemical cleaning of the metal frame and glass to remove inconsistent dusty deposits and greasy dirt and remove strips of adhesive tape. Subsequently, the bonding of the fractured parts and the replacement of any damaged elements (screws, bolts) were carried out.
