Facilitated description:

The corame is a large piece of leather that hangs on the walls. The corame was made during the 1500s.
The corame is kept at the Museo Civico d'Arte Antica in Turin (Palazzo Madama).
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the corame in 2021 for an exhibition in Mantua.
The restorers dismantled the leather band on the upper side.
They cleaned the horn with a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt. Then they wiped the metal parts with sponges.
They sewed the unstitched areas between the leather panels and attached the raised leather parts.
In the end, they mounted a ribbon and magnetic blocks to hang the coram.

Abstract of the intervention:

Restoration

The project was carried out on the occasion of the exhibition at Palazzo Te in Mantua The walls of wonders. Court choirs between the Gonzagas and Europe (26 March – 26 June 2022).
The intervention began with the disassembly of the leather band applied on the upper side and with the cleaning with vacuum cleaner to remove inconsistent deposits. A dry cleaning with sponges and a chemical cleaning with demineralized water in the meccata metal leaf parts were followed. The consolidation phase included localised stabilisation of the uncovered areas between some leather panels with cotton threads, a surface action of re-adhesion of raised leather flakes and structural interventions involving the insertion of Japanese paper supports, paper veil and adhesives of a cellulosic nature compatible with the materials in place. The two fragments of black fabric found at the top of the parade were removed dry, mechanically. Finally, a suspension system was studied to rearrange the work in a vertical position on the occasion of the exhibition in Mantua. A reversible constraint system was then chosen, using a continuous magnetic tape for the top of the horn and rectangular magnetic blocks to support the vertical sides.
