Facilitated description:

Mountain Landscape is a painting on canvas.
Mario Viani d'Ovrano painted the painting in 1888.
The painting represents a road in a mountain landscape.
The painting is kept at the Castle of Moncalieri.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the painting in 2012.
Scientists did scientific analysis to study how the painting was made.
The restorers cleaned the frame (wooden structure that stands behind the painting and serves and supports the painting).
They repaired the torn canvas parts.
Then they cleaned the front of the painting.
The restorers filled the color gaps with stucco (plaster and glue layer).
They painted the putty.
Eventually they cleaned the frame and rebuilt some missing decoration parts.

Abstract of the intervention:

Restoration

The restoration was preceded by a multispectral analysis campaign in order to obtain information on the state of conservation and the execution technique of the work. It was first made a series of shots in ultraviolet fluorescence and then an infrared detection and its processing in false color.

The intervention on the painting Paesaggio montano started with the cleaning of the frame with vacuum cleaner and soft bristle brush and then with sponges to remove the sedimentation of incoherent atmospheric particulate. Subsequently the canvas support was cleaned, the tears on the edges were compensated with the addition of perimeter bands in synthetic canvas and an insurance system with metal points was prepared.
On the pictorial film, a two-step chemical cleaning was performed to eliminate coherent and inconsistent deposits, followed by a washing for the removal of residues. De-adhesion phenomena were solved with localized consolidation. The micro-gaps of color were compensated with plaster and glue plastering and retouched in camouflage with watercolor colors. Finally, a cleaning was done on the frame and the missing parts of decorations with two-component resin were reconstructed, integrated in camouflage with paint and gold powder colors.
