Facilitated description:

The Winged Genius is a painting by Pedro Amerigo made in 1888.
The painting depicts an angel with the symbol of the Savoy family (white cross on a red background), a flag in his right hand and a laurel wreath in his left hand. The painting is kept at the Royal Palace of Turin.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the desk in 2017.
The restorers dismantled the painting from the frame.
They cleaned the painting from the dust in front and behind.
They removed the folds from the painting and reinforced the frame (wooden structure that serves to support the painting).
They filled the missing color parts with putty (plaster and glue layer). They colored the putty with watercolors.
They cleaned the frame and filled the missing parts with colored putty.

Abstract of the intervention:

Restoration

The intervention began with cleaning to eliminate surface dirt. The painting was then dismantled from the frame and the incoherent deposits were removed from the back and from the frame and the canvas was smoothed with moisture and through biettes. It was therefore strengthened the system of constraint between the canvas and the frame with the addition of staples and the canvas with fabric inserts. The gaps were grouted and supplemented with watercolor colors, and the bleached areas were tuned with the colors of the surrounding areas.
A first dry cleaning was carried out on the frame, followed by a solvent cleaning to eliminate the substances of the previous restorations and the most consistent dirt. Subsequently, the cracks were consolidated and plastered on the overhanging decorative parts, then chromatically integrated with watercolor with hatching technique.
