Facilitated description:
St. John the Evangelist and St. Peter with the Rooster is a painting on canvas.
The painting represents at the top left a rooster, below St. John and on the right St. Peter with a book in his hand.
Giovanni Baglione painted the painting in 1608.
The painting is kept at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the painting in 2014.
The restorers cleaned the painting from dust and removed some of the paintings from the old restoration.
They filled the color gaps with a layer of putty (plaster and glue).
They painted the putty with watercolors and paint.
They painted the painting to protect it from the sun's rays and dust.
After the restorers cleaned the frame from dust.
They left the paint dark because it's old.
They filled the holes of the frame with stucco (plaster and glue).
They've gilded the putty.
In the end they inserted a band between the frame and the painting to distance them.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The restoration of the painting began with stops and consolidations to stabilize the adhesion defects especially in the areas along the edges. The surface deposits were then removed from the back of the painting, the frame and the frame with brushes and micro-aspirators. Dust deposits consistent with chemical cleaning and residues of paints and retouching of previous restoration have been eliminated on the pictorial surface. On the other hand, the retouching and veiling due to historicized restorations were maintained, where the pictorial layer below was particularly fragile or fragmentary (blue drapery, embodied). The fillers that were overflowing on the original or flat were mechanically removed and replaced, while those deemed suitable were retained. Subsequently, the chromatic integration of the fillers with watercolor colors and the abrasions with paint colors was carried out and a protective varnish was applied.
The frame has been chemically cleaned, taking care not to remove the brown paint, recognized as patina. Interventions were then carried out to stop and consolidate the adhesion defects and fill the gaps. Finally, the new fillers have been integrated with watercolor, a protective varnish has been applied and an adhesive teflon film has been applied on the support to protect against abrasions.
