Facilitated description:
David the Winner of Goliath is a painting.
The painting depicts David standing with his sword after killing the giant Goliath.
The painter Giovan Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, painted the painting in the mid-1600s.
The painting is kept at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre carried out a maintenance (small interventions) on the painting in 2015.
After the restoration the painting was on display at the Reggia di Venaria.
Scientists at the Venaria Center did scientific analysis to see how the restorations of the past were done.
The restorers cleaned the painting and the frame from dust.
They checked the state of preservation of the paintings of the old restorations and the paint layer over the paint.
Abstract of the intervention:
Maintenance
The extraordinary maintenance work was carried out on the occasion of the exhibition of the work during the visit to the Reggia di Venaria. A revision of the painting and the golden frame was therefore planned, including surface cleaning, balancing the protective film, and reviewing the previous altered touch-ups. The project also includes a diagnostic campaign of investigations with UV light and false-color infrared in order to verify the extent and type of the previous retouching.
