Facilitated description:
Jesus Among the Doctors is a painting on canvas.
The painter Giovanni Battista Beinaschi painted the painting in 1675-1680.
The painting depicts Jesus as a young man among scholars and sages.
The painting is kept at the Castle of Racconigi.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the painting in 2009.
The restoration was attended by the students of the restoration school.
The painting was covered with a tissue (thin paper that serves not to drop the color).
The restorers have removed the tissue.
They did a treatment against insects that eat wood.
They lined the canvas (mounted a reinforcement canvas behind the painting).
They cleaned the painting of dust.
They filled the color gaps with putty (plaster and glue).
They painted the stucco with watercolors.
Eventually they painted the painting to protect it from the sun's rays and dust.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The restoration of the canvas from the deposits of the Castle of Racconigi was the subject of an internship carried out in 2009 by the students of the Degree Course in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage and then continued in the educational paths of the PFP2 sector. The work was covered with a velinatura, made before 1950, with sheets of paper glued to the pictorial surface. The painting was then demolished, a substantial intervention on the support and the cleaning operations were carried out to allow the painting to be presented to the public in the exhibition Jesus. The body, the face in art (Reggia di Venaria, 1 April - 5 September 2010) set up on the occasion of the exposition of the Shroud in Turin. The work then returned to the laboratories of the Restoration Center for further interventions in the field of teaching projects. The stuccoing and imitation phase of the surface texture ended in July 2015 and then the operations of watercolor pictorial integration began. During the course of these years the interventions carried out on the canvas can be summarized as follows:
- first intervention on site with the removal of the tissue of paper glued to the surface, localized consolidations and a new tissueing
- removal of the canvas and paste glue from the verso
- biocidal treatment
- consolidations and color stoppage
- removal of the waxing and subsequent cleaning of the surface from retouching and old altered paints
- lining intervention
- tensioning on new wooden frame
- plastering in imitation of the surface texture
- pictorial integration with watercolor colors and final varnish glazes
- application of final varnish for protective purposes
