21mc01-02-2014_Caravino, Castello di Masino (FAI), Canopy bed (Chamber of Ambassadors of Austria)
Facilitated description:
The four-poster bed is a type of bed with a fabric cover.
The bed was made in the Piedmontese laboratories at the end of the 1700s.
The four-poster bed is kept at the Castle of Masino in Caravino, in the chamber of the ambassadors of Austria.
The castle of Masino is an asset of the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI).
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the four-poster bed in 2014.
The restorers cleaned the fabric and wood parts directly at the castle of Masino.
Then they removed the bedspread (covered above the bed) and the front part of the canopy (fabric cover).
They took the two tissues to the Venaria labs.
The restorers removed the dust from the fabrics with a small vacuum cleaner.
They have eliminated the old seams of the past restoration.
They sewed new linings (reinforced fabrics).
The restoration followed the methods already used in the other residences of the Fondo Ambiente Italiano.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The project involved the restoration of the four-poster bed (textile and wooden elements) of the chamber of the Austrian ambassadors of the castle of Masino. The intervention aimed at cleaning the surface and recovering the textile unit of all the components of the work (canopy sky, mantua, curtains, headboard, wooden structure of the bed, bedspread). Two lots of work were therefore carried out: the first involved the physical-mechanical cleaning of the textile covering of the bed on site, while the second involved the dismantling of the bedspread and the front ruffle and transport to the JRC textile workshop.
Suction was carried out on all surfaces to eliminate dust deposits. In addition, before disassembly, a graphic survey of documentation was made. On the bedspread and on the front flounce the lining and weaving interventions have been removed, the consolidations have been carried out and the new linings have been applied.
The intervention was carried out in line with the conservation methods already expressed in the planned maintenance sites of the other residences of the FAI (Villa del Balbianello, Villa Fogazzano Roi, Villa Della Porta Bozzolo, Villa Necchi Campiglio).
