17mc02-MT-2016_Caravino, Castello di Masino (FAI),1 couple curtains doors and 2 mantovana (Camera delle Tre Finistre)
Facilitated description:
The 4 curtains are made of silk fabric.
The tents were made in Piedmontese workshops at the end of the 1700s.
The tents are kept at the Castello di Masino in Caravino in the Camera delle Tre Finestre.
The castle of Masino is an asset of the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI).
The Conservation and Restoration Centre carried out a maintenance (small interventions) on the tents in 2016.
The restorers cleaned the curtains from dust with a small vacuum cleaner.
They reinforced the damaged parts with the sandwich technique (they sewed the damaged fabric between two layers of transparent fabric).
The restoration followed the methods already used in the other residences of the Fondo Ambiente Italiano.
Abstract of the intervention:
Maintenance
The extraordinary maintenance project of the textile equipment of the castle of Masino involved the furnishings of different environments (Camera del Vicerè, Camera delle Tre Windows, Camera degli Ambasciatori di Spagna, Camera degli Ambasciatori d'Austri, Ballroom, Sala dei Gobelins, Camera da letto della Regina). In particular, in the Chamber of the Three Windows, a pair of curtains of the doors with two mantovans was restored, which presented degradations at the expense of the textile unit, lacerations and total lack of parts of original fabric due to anthropogenic causes. The intervention provided for physical cleaning operations by means of light macro-aspiration and consolidation of the degrades by means of a conservative sandwich technique with total coverage of the degraded areas with tulle of a suitable colour.
The intervention was carried out in line with the conservation methods already expressed in the planned maintenance sites of the other residences of the FAI (Villa del Balbianello, Villa Fogazzano Roi, Villa Della Porta Bozzolo, Villa Necchi Campiglio).
