Facilitated description:

The papier peint is a wallpaper (paper that attaches to the wall as decoration).
Wallpaper was made in the mid-1800s.
The wallpaper is kept at the Castle of Masino in Caravino.
The Castle of Masino is an asset of the Italian Environment Fund.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the wallpaper in 2019.
The restorers cleaned the wallpaper from dust with a small vacuum cleaner.
They glued some parts that were peeling off.

Abstract of the intervention:

Maintenance

The maintenance of the wallpaper of the Corridor of the Pope of the Castle of Masino is part of the preventive conservation of historic houses. The safety of the wall decorations of this environment has tried to stabilize the chemical-physical and anthropogenic degradations through consolidation interventions (dedusting, flattening and relocation at the site of the detached papier peint parts). The state of conservation has detected the presence of damage caused by infiltration and thermo-hygrometric changes and by rubbing of the furniture.
As a first step, atmospheric particulate deposits and surface deposits were removed by means of vacuum cleaners, brushes and sponges. Subsequently, the detached parts were made to adhere, inserting bridges of Japanese paper and adhesive (drying by means of thermocautery). The abrasions and detachments of the higher bordures of the walls were reattached, while the gaps and lacerations of larger entities bordering the ceiling were not integrated as an intervention was also necessary on the wall.
