The four-poster bed is a bed that has a fabric cover.
The four-poster bed is kept at Castello della Manta in Saluzzo in Michele Antonio's bedroom.
Castello della Manta is an asset of the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre has restored the fabric of the four-poster bed.
The restorers cleaned the fabric of the dust.
They eliminated the old restorations because they were not suitable.
They replaced the metal hooks that were used to hang the fabric with fabric hooks.
They reinforced the front of the fabric with a piece of canvas.
In the end they put tulle (transparent fabric) to protect the damaged fabric parts.

Abstract of the intervention:

Restoration

The curtains of the four-poster bed of Michele Antonio's Room at Castello della Manta have been restored as part of a project that involved interventions on various textile and furniture furnishings. The main objective of the restoration was to stabilise the degraded areas and secure them so as not to jeopardise their refunctionalisation and refurbishment in the original environment. The curtains, in fact, were mainly affected by chemical and physical degradation of the fibres and dyes, caused by the microclimatic conditions of the exhibition environment typical of historic residences (long exposure times to light and variations in temperature and relative humidity, dust settling).
The restoration has provided for cleaning with vacuum cleaner to eliminate deposits from the surface. Subsequently, the previous hanging system with metal rings was removed and all previous unsuitable restoration interventions were dismantled. The consolidations of the Mantua followed with the application of a total support in veil of Lyon. At the same time, the deformations were spread and the free fibers were repositioned at the abrasions. To protect the surface, chromatic tulle veils have been applied in harmony with the original (total on the mantua and partial with the curtains). Finally, the new hanging system of the curtains has been prepared by sewing cotton webbing.
