20-CR-2009_Turin, Teatro Regio, U. Mastroianni, Cancelled "Musical Odyssey"
Facilitated description:
The entrance gate of the Teatro Regio in Turin is made of metal.
Umberto Mastroianni made the cancellation in 1994.
The gate represents dance and theatre.
The show is titled Musical Odyssey.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the gate in 2009.
The restorers studied how the gate was built.
They cleaned the gate by different methods.
In this way they eliminated the dust and the damaged parts of the protective substance.
In the end they put a product to protect the metal.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The gate of the Teatro Regio in Turin had a considerable degradation due to the seposito dust and the alteration of the protective. The intervention, of an experimental nature, constituted a case study on a contemporary work of art for which precise methodological choices were made. In fact, it was decided to respect the historical past of the work and to operate by proceeding with the only cleaning. Therefore, the luministic effects have not been restored to avoid arbitrary interpretations.
Following some tests, the most suitable cleaning method was that of sandblasting with glass microspheres. For some of the panels with foundry patinas and luministic finishes, the pressure microsandblaster was used. The top of the gate has been mechanically and chemically cleaned of pigeon grease and dirt residues. The surface was then protected with a double layer of acrylic resin with added corrosion inhibitor. In addition, the modules that enclose the wheels have been protected with microcrystalline wax with corrosion inhibitor to protect against animal manure.
