Facilitated description:
Portrait of Umberto I in the clothes of the Grand Master of the Order of SS. Maurizio e Lazzaro is a painting on canvas.
The painter Rodolfo Morgari painted the painting in 1886.
The painting is kept in the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the painting in 2017.
The restorers cleaned up behind the painting.
They repositioned the canvas on the frame (wooden structure that stands behind the painting and serves to support the painting).
They eliminated the folds of the painting.
Then they cleaned the front of the painting.
They painted the painting to protect it from the sun's rays and dust.
The restorers have also restored the frame.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The intervention on Morgari's canvas has returned planarity to the canvas support and gloss to the blurred pictorial layers.
The intervention began with the cleaning of the textile support from the back and the retensioning of the canvas at the corners. The frame, still in good condition, has been cleaned with brushes, aspitator and sponges.
At the level of the pictorial film a chemical cleaning was carried out.
In agreement with the works management, the existing painting has been maintained. In the end, a protective paint was sprayed.
On the frame were carried out a cleaning, consolidation with resin, grouting of gaps and chromatic integration with gold leaf and watercolor colors.
