51-CR-2008_Venaria, Piazza dell'Annunziata, Apparition of the Virgin to a devotee

Facilitated description:

The painting Apparition of the Virgin to a Devotee is a mural painting.
The mural painting is a painting made on a wall.
The painting was made in the late 1700s and represents the Madonna and a kneeling woman.
The painting is kept in Venaria, to the left of the entrance door of the former Civil Hospital.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the painting in 2008.
The restoration was attended by the restoration students of the degree course.
The restorers cleaned the painting of dust and dirt.
They put material in the cracks to stop the damage.
Then, they strengthened the parts of paint that were peeling off.
They have eliminated old groutings (plaster and glue layer), nails and non-original paint parts.
They filled the missing colored parts with watercolors and with a layer of colored stucco (plaster and glue).
In the end they spread a product all over the surface to protect it from the sun's rays and dust.

Abstract of the intervention:

Restoration

Restoration of the mural painting Apparition of the Virgin to a Devotee was carried out as part of a didactic project carried out with the students of the interfaculty degree course in Conservation and Restoration. The painting is located to the left of the entrance portal of the former Civil Hospital of Venaria in Piazza dell’Annunziata. Thanks to the preliminary phase of study it was possible to identify the fresco executive technique and the temporal succession in the drafting of the plasters (made evident by the overlapping of the day joints).
The intervention began with mechanical cleaning of inconsistent deposits. The cracking with resin was then consolidated. To protect the edges of the cracks from excess consolidating have been previously spread bandages. The consolidations of the most superficial and deepest adhesion defects of the pictorial film were therefore carried out. The cleaning of the surface has therefore been deepened: the plastering of the previous restorations, the non-original nails and metal elements and the repainting of the lower part due to the remaking of the surfaces adjacent to the painting have been eliminated. Finally, in the pictorial integration phase, plaster gaps and retouching were carried out (for larger abrasions with light watercolor veils and for micro-gaps with plastering and tone or striped integration).
Finally, a protective layer was applied to the entire surface.

A new extraordinary maintenance work was carried out on the painting in 2011 due to a vandalism.
